Shown from the chest up in the bottom right quadrant of the composition, a person holds one arm straight up with the thumb and first two fingers extended as their hair blows back from their face in this vertical lithograph. On tan-colored paper, the person is printed in tones of gray, as if sketched in charcoal. The mouth is wide open and teeth visible. The person has high cheekbones, heavy, pointed brows, and straight hair. A garment is suggested with long strokes of gray. The hand not raised in the air rests on the person’s chest, and is cut off by the bottom edge of the print. Three large words are written behind the person in sharply defined letters: “Nie” at the top left, “wieder” above the person’s head, to our right of upraised arm, and “Krieg” near the person’s shoulder to our left. The first two words are each underlined once and the third word, “Krieg,” is underlined several times. An inscription is written across the left half of the bottom of the sheet: “Mitteldeutsher Jugendtag Leipzig 2.-4. August 1924.” The artist signed the work in the lower right corner, “Kollwitz.”
