Artist, Czech, 1871 - 1957

This painting depicts a forest scene with a deer in the center, standing in a small clearing. Tall gray-brown trees and a dense green canopy surround the area. A red squirrel crouches on a branch above the deer, and there is a bird on a tree to the left. A snake slithers over the ground below, its stomach bulging. The deer is looking directly at us. It has a gray-brown coat and short antlers. The brushstrokes in the painting are loose and fluid.
