This painting shows a portrait of a middle-aged man who looks out at us. He is seated in a chair, turned slightly to the left, with his hands holding a gray hat in his lap. The man has pale skin with a brown mustache and a neatly trimmed beard, and his hair is slicked back and appears to be balding. He is wearing a dark suit with a white shirt and a patterned tie. On one of his fingers, he wears a gold ring. The background of the painting is an ornate interior, with richly patterned wallpaper, drapery, or furniture suggested by thick brushstrokes in shades of brown, tan, and black.
