[1] Lake lent the work to the May 1836 exhibition, “Pictures by Italian, Spanish, Flemish, Dutch, and French Masters,” at the British Institution (no. 63, as The Lover). Burton Frederickson identified Lake as living at No.40 Oxford Terrace, Hyde Park, with a death date of 1847 (see Getty Provenance Index notes for sale Br-5752).
[2] An annotated copy of the 1845 sale from the RKD gives Eckford as buyer.
[3] The painting is listed in volume II of A Catalogue of the Paintings at Doughty House Richmond & Elsewhere in the Collection of Sir Frederick Cook BT, London: 1913, no. 376. Cook’s father Francis was largely responsible for the important collection at Doughty House, which he assembled in the mid-to-late nineteenth century.
