Painter, American, 1860 - 1961

This painting shows a rural green landscape with distant blue mountains, green valleys, dark green forests, and bodies of light blue water. In the center, a vivid red and orange fire consumes countless trees, with gray smoke billowing into the blue sky above. On the left, people and horses move between the fire and a small white house. Closer to us are two larger white houses near the bottom left corner, with more people and horses in front of them. All of the people appear to have pale skin, and some wear colorful dresses, black suits, or white shirts with brown pants. In the bottom right corner is another small pond at the base of a green hill, with more horses and a brown duck flying across the water. In the top right corner, gray birds fly away from the blaze.
